Algebraic Construction of Tail-Biting Trellises for Linear Block Codes

چکیده
In this paper, we present an algebraic construction of tail-biting trellises. The proposed method is based on the state space expressions, i.e., the state space is the image of the set of information sequences under the associated state matrix. Then combining with the homomorphism theorem, an algebraic trellis construction is obtained. We show that a tailbiting trellis constructed based on the proposed method is isomorphic to the associated Koetter–Vardy (KV) trellis and tail-biting Bahl–Cocke–Jelinek–Raviv (BCJR) trellis. We also evaluate the complexity of the obtained tail-biting trellises. On the other hand, a matrix consisting of linearly independent rows of the characteristic matrix is regarded as a generalization of minimal-span generator matrices. Then we show that a KV trellis is constructed based on an extended minimal-span generator matrix. It is shown that this construction is a natural extension of the method proposed by McEliece (1996).

Tail-biting Trellises for Linear Codes and their Duals
Trellis representations of linear block codes are attractive because of their use in soft decision decoding algorithms. An interesting property that is known for conventional trellises is that the minimal conventional trellis (known to be unique) for a linear block code, and its dual have the same state-complexity profile. This interesting property follows from the BCJR construction [1] of the ...
متن کاملUnifying Views of Tail-Biting Trellises for Linear Block Codes
This thesis presents new techniques for the construction and specification of linear tail-biting trellises. Tail-biting trellises for linear block codes are combinatorial descriptions in the form of layered graphs, that are somewhat more compact than the corresponding conventional trellis descriptions. Conventional trellises for block codes have a well understood underlying theory. On the other...

متن کاملOn the Algebraic Structure of Linear Trellises
Trellises are crucial graphical representations of codes. While conventional trellises are well understood, the general theory of (tail-biting) trellises is still under development. Iterative decoding concretely motivates such theory. In this paper we first develop a new algebraic framework for a systematic analysis of linear trellises which enables us to address open foundational questions. In...
متن کاملTail-Biting Trellises of Block Codes: Trellis Complexity and Viterbi Decoding Complexity
Tail-biting trellises of linear and nonlinear block codes are addressed. We refine the information-theoretic approach of a previous work on conventional trellis representation, and show that the same ideas carry over to tail-biting trellises. We present lower bounds on the state and branch complexity profiles of these representations. These bounds are expressed in terms of mutual information be...
